There are three main different miata models

1. NC MX-5 Mazda lost the rights to the name Miata so they dropped it. It is now called the MX-5. I have only drooled over these at the dealer ship. They are way too far out of my price range. From what I have read in magazines, they are suppose to be the best overall Miata. However, I would guess that due to their increased size and weight, the fun factor may be lower than the original model Miata, while practicality factor has probably risen.

2. NB Miata (1999 - 2005) The NB Miatas feel more like a refined NA Miata, a more luxurious Miata. I would seriously consider getting one however even the 1999 are slightly out of my price range. These Miatas should definitely be taken into consideration if they are in your price range.

3. NA Miata (1990-1997) There are two different types of NA Miatas.

1. 1.6L NA Miata - this is the first Miata I have owned. They were made from 1990 - 1993. The 1.6L engines have less power than the next generation 1.8l Miatas, however they feel more free revving and some people prefer them to the newer 1.8L. You should watch out for the 1990 Miatas because they have short nose crank issues. Not big deal aslong as you fix it.

2. 1.8l NA Miata - these Miata were made from 1994-1997 The 1.8L Miatas are your best bet if you are going for all out power for your Miata. They have bigger engines that produce more torque and horsepower. The 1.8l Miatas also have a minor face lift, added structural stiffness and a few other updates.
